In the lovely city of Trenton, NJ, two State Police officers named in a lawsuit alleging sexual harassment and assault have been suspended indefinitely, a spokesman told JRL.

Lt. Thomas King and Sgt. Christine Shallcross were suspended without pay at the end of December 2009 pending the outcome of an internal investigation by IAB (Internal Affairs Bureau).

Sgt. Stephen Jones stated "Trooper Alexis Hayes accused King, a 26-year veteran, of assaulting and impregnating her. She also said Shallcross, a 14-year veteran, sexually harassed her during and after academy training".

In her lawsuit, filed last month in U.S. District Court in Camden, Hayes, 29, stated that King got her drunk then obtained a key to her hotel room and assaulted her during an operation with other troopers in Pittsburgh. At the time, King was Hayes’ commanding officer in a tactical patrol unit that dealt with traffic enforcement cases.

Hayes became pregnant but decided to have an abortion according to the lawsuit. Despite her moral opposition to abortion, "she could not bear the thought of having a child by King," the lawsuit states.

During her academy training, Hayes allegedly was harassed by Sgt. Shallcross, then an instructor there. After Hayes graduated, Shallcross allegedly made sexual advances on her by whispering in her ear and kissing her on the cheek, according to the lawsuit.

Until her suspension, Sgt. Shallcross was assigned to the investigations bureau. Hayes has been on paid sick leave since August of 2009 after suffering a nervous breakdown on the job do to the harassment she was subjected to stated her lawyer, William Buckman.

Her seven-count lawsuit asks for a trial by jury and an independent monitor to oversee the State Police’s internal affairs investigation. I wonder if attorney Buckman is insinuating that the IAB unit wouldn't be able to be fair in their findings.

Jim Gaffigan, president of the Non-Commissioned Officers Association, which represents sergeants in these types of cases, declined to give JRL a comment on this case.

We also attempted to contact Steve Sternik, president of the State Troopers Superior Officers Association, which handles the legal affairs of lieutenants and he to did not return our repeated calls pertaining to this matter.

We did however get comments from Sgt Shallcross through her attorney and she stated "the sexual harassment allegations against her outlined in a female officer’s lawsuit stem from colleague jealousy over gay troopers winning promotions for good work in the organization".

George T. Daggett, lawyer for Sgt. Christine Shallcross, 43, of Woodbine, Ocean County, stated that he had reviewed the statements of more than 40 witnesses in the department in connection with this alleged harassment, “and with very few exceptions I might add the vast majority favored my client” in denying such conduct ever occurred.
