DIRTY BIRD PICTURES SETS RELEASE DATE FOR HOLLYWOOD MARINE
By: Andy Powell, Staff Writer 8-17-07 1:39 a.m. PDT
Hollywood Marine is the story of Adam,a fresh-faced young Marine facing
deployment to Iraq.
On his last weekend of freedom, Adam
visits Boy’s Town in West Hollywood, where the lure of good times brings out the real bad
boy hidden beneath the uniform.
Dink Flamingo’s tantalizing concept has
been sharply scripted and directed by
Mike Donner and skillfully edited by Steve Jerome.
Dink provides only “the real thing” in his films, and Hollywood Marine is no different.
This time, he cast a straight man from the Active Duty stable of actors in the lead role of Adam. Hops previously appeared only in Active Duty amateur videos. His transformation from a wide-eyed country boy to a slick con man is his masterful debut into professional videos.
The DVD extras section contains an interview of Hops by Dink Flamingo that adds depth to the understanding of the actor and the role. Viewers get to hear a real straight man’s perspective on filming gay scenes, including his likes, dislikes, and the experience of working with a script and 18-hour days.
The fireworks on the set were sometimes as hot asthe action in front of the camera. Producer Flamingo insisted on things being real, harsh and even profane, and Hollywood Marine delivers.
Director-writer Donner was happy to compromise, as long as it ensured the integrity of the story.
This collaboration resulted in an impressive product with a final plot twist that is surprising and memorable. The overall story and film proved such a success that a sequel is already in pre-production.
Flamingo says, "The first morning of shooting, Mike Donner and I were off to the side away from the rest of the crew and cast, having a heated discussion about how the scene should be shot. In the end we laughed at ourselves, but it kept the cast and crew on their toes.
It forced everyone involved to give us their best. It was a clever ploy that we used throughout the entire four days of shooting as everyone was very serious about making a good product. Mike and I see eye-to-eye in a little/big sister way. And I assure you I'm the biggest sister (laughs out loud). Mike's just great.”
Steve Jerome, Director of Operations for Dirty Bird Pictures, has been working with Dink Flamingo and Active Duty on and off for nearly ten years. He says, “I’ve seen Dink’s temper many times before, so when he and Donner were literally screaming at each other, I took it in stride.
I knew that a few minutes later they would be camping it up again. Plus, the end result of their heated deliberations only made the final product better.”
Donner says, “I agree that this was a challenging but fun shoot! Hops is my man! He nailed the character and the sex scenes perfectly. And Billy, as always, had my back with the second camera.
Between Billy and I, we were able to get some fantastic shots! I am so looking forward to doing the sequel with Hops and Dink again for HOLLYWOOD MARINE 2.
Jerome adds, “The talent really came through for us during the long days of shooting. When the actors weren’t rehearsing or acting, they were posing for stills so we could have good choices for our cover artwork.
I knew we were going to produce a tri-fold package on this title, so we needed plenty of good shots with several options. The Marine Corps uniform is not easy to wear for long periods of time, yet Hops never complained.”
Dink Flamingo concludes: "Mike and Steve are a lot of fun to work with. I was really hyped about Steve's editing with Hollywood. We sat up a few nights reviewing the process, and a few times I just exploded.
Steve in his calm manner would always listen intently,
taking my suggestions and pointing out when they were flawed. I've had more of my heart, soul and just plain bitchiness in this feature than I have the three previous Dirty Bird endeavors. And I'm glad I have.
On that note, I'm looking for other eager, talented directors and editors to help expand Dirty Bird Pictures. If you wanna fight with me and think you got what it takes, drop me a line."
Hollywood Marine is scheduled for release on September 15th.
