GAY EROTIC AWARD SHOWS LACK COVERAGE OF BLACK, LATIN, AND ASIAN GENRES
By: Jeff Livingston, Staff Writer - 03-30-09 - 12:30 a.m PDT
Urban Studios across the globe are truly alarmed with the nominations and winners for the 2009 Gay Erotic Awards Shows that have been held so far this year. For example, at the Castro Theater in San Francisco this past Saturday Night March 28, 2009.
Out of th 49 categories, only two features were winners under the urban categories.
However, congratulations do go out to last night's winners at the 2009 GayVN Award shows for ther two Ethnic Categories.

All Worlds/C1R, won for Best Ethnic-Themed Film: Black Balled 6: Under the Hood [2009]. Falcon Studios/Pulse, won for Best Ethnic-Themed Film-Latin: Roman's Holiday [2008]. (See the Winners at the 2009 GayVN Awards Show)
Needless to say, Latino Fan Club, OTB Video, Real Urban Men, Pitbull Productions, Flava Works Films, RockaFellaz Entertainment, Chocolate Cream Productions, Top Dog Productions, Edward James' EJ Productions, Bacchus Releasing and newcomer Forbidden Funk Media who have had two back to back No.1 hits on the JRL Weekly Top 10 Bondage & Fetish chart, were surprised to see that none of the studios mentioned above were not considered for any categories of consequence so far this year in Award Ceremonies..

Forbidden Funk Media for example, are the first black owned studio to deliver Top Quality Black Bondage & Fetish and yet, they have not received any recognition from all of the gay blogs, industry publications, aside from JRL, since they first launched through French Connection over 1 year ago.
The Asian genre has been over looked for years. From the classic Asian Balls series from Channel 69 to Thai Twink Productions...Island Caprice studios to Exotic Productions, have all been over shadowed and hardly ever mentioned in the Gay Erotic Media.
The excuse of "well, minority product always produces low quality productions" has truly played out. If this was the case, these studios would not have an audience nor would they be in business for more than a decade. Some studios have been around for more than 20 years. So to say that type of talk has got to stop.
Award shows are to represent the entire Gay Adult Film Industry as a whole and not cater to a selected few. This is not to take anything away from the nominated and winning studios. However, this has everyting to do with coverage of our industry as a whole for credibility sake.
Minority genre based films make up 35% of the Gay Adult Film Industry and that is something that Award shows cannot continue to ignore. With the power of the internet, gay and lesbian consumers can see for themselves what is available for their Adult Entertainment fix.
When they see award shows continue to ignore their favorite genre or, when they see that their genre does not receive the same coverage as others, they will soon see a negative response towards those award shows that continue to alienate minority gay xxx films.
This might shed some light as to why urban studios have not supported any of the Gay Erotic Film Awards so far this year.
Everyone always states that "no we are not racists", "we always cast black, latin and asian models in our films" "retailers tell us it won't sell with minorities on the cover"...these are the formal statements that we always here from various professionals in our industry today. While you do have major labels investing money into the minority genres, we still have to look at the fact that it is still not getting the proper coverage that it deserves.
Hopefully in the near future, we will see a true representation of the entire Gay Adult Film Industry and not just a small percentage of our industry. It takes the entire industry to make our business work and that goes for both Heterosexual and the Gay Adult film industry markets.
No other industry does this, not the mainstream movie industry, the music industry or the publishing industry alienates minorities more than the Straight and Gay Adult Film Industry. OTB Video, Pitbull Productions, Latino Fan Club, Chocolate Cream Productions as well as Real Urban Men Entertainment, have all captured No.1 hits in the USA on the JRL Weekly Top 50 Latin and JRL Weekly Top 50 Black Gay Charts consistantly over the past 5 years and it is amazing that none of these studios captured not only a win but a nomination.

If award shows are strictly for advertsers for the various publications that sponsor these events, then they need to indicate that when they launch their Award Shows. This way they are completely transparrant. The word is, is that if you do not advertise in these publications, you will not be nominated. If this is the case, magazines need to state that when they nominate studios, these nominations are based on advertisers who support their publications.
This way they won't have to hear how the award shows are rigged, fixed or already pre-determined. I do want to congratule all of the winners at the 2009 GayVN Awards Show. The nominees and winners, but their butts to bring gay consumers the best that the business can offer and no one can take that away from them. I hope that they will receive huge re-orders from retailers both in the European Union and the United States for their Award winning gay xxx feature films.
