Famed Director Bill Hunter Hangs With Keith Witchka, JRL Staff Writer
Keith: JRL Fans, It's about to get crazy in here today because I have the honor of bringing to you the Producer and Director Bill Hunter of Hot Desert Knights.
Welcome Bill to JRL and thank you for hanging out with me today.
Bill: Keith, my pleaure!
Keith: We have a lot to cover today...first off a new distribution deal with White Tiger Releasing. Tell us about how that came to be.
Bill: Hot Desert Knights is a production company.....we make films and that's what we enjoy doing and that's what we do best. When we started the company back in 1989 no one really wanted to distribute bareback films, so out of necessity we began our own distribution company, HDK Distirbution, Inc. Over the years the distribution side of our business was a great success but grew to such a point that it began to interfere with us being able to produce films. So, we decided to get out of the distribution side of the business and to look for a distributor whom we felt we could work with and would do a good job servicing our existing accounts and getting new accounts. After talking with most of the gay distributors out there we decided on White Tiger Releasing. They already distribute a number of gay lines and we talked to those producers and without exception they all expressed their solid satisfaction with White Tiger, and specifically, Rob Ragan at White Tiger. After much negotiations we made the decision to go with White Tiger exclusively in the United States. We also have an exclusive Distribution Agreement for Europe with Dusedo in Amsterdam so now we can concentrate on doing nothing but filming hot bareback films.
Keith: Barebacking as you know is a HOT BUTTON issue.....how have you handled the pressure from your counterparts in the industry?
Bill: We have always maintained that what consenting, informed adults do in their sexual lives is their business and their business only. No one has the right to dictate to others what they should or should not do sexually. Whenever anyone in our industry has expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that we make bareback films we gently remind them that whenever they, or the government, has the right to make barebacking illegal, we are then just one step away from someone or the government attempting to make any form of gay sex illegal, just like it used to be in many states. The government doesn't belong in anyone's bedroom at any time. One thing you need to remember about HDK is that we neither promote or discourage barebacking. We simply say that informed, consensual sex between adults is between them. We also say, and we say it on EVERY box cover and at the beginning of EVERY film; "If you are HIV negative you should do everything in your power to stay that way". We present barebacking as a fantasy only and we don't believe that someone watching one of our films, or any of the other films produced by the other bareback companies in the industry, is going to rush right out and have bareback sex just because they saw it in a film. We give our viewers more credit than that. To suggest anything different is to suggest that our community, the gay community, isn't very intelligent and we don't believe that for a minute. Gay adult films are produced for entertainment and for fantasy. For condom studios to suggest anything different simply shows that they think more highly of themselves than they should and they less of their viewers than they should.
Keith: As you know Bill, Bareback Titles are hot sellers in both retail and internet. What do you think drives the marketplace for bareback features?
Bill: I think that bareback films have been successful in the marketplace for a number of reasons. They certainly are more natural and realistic. They aren't as scripted as some of the major condom studios films. We tend to use guys in our films that viewers can relate to, average guys who just enjoy having sex. We normally don't attempt to have a plot, we offer what the viewer wants to see, and that's just hot action from beginning to end. As we say, "no fluff and no fast forward". Another reason for the success of our bareback films is that we are offering a fantasy for those guys who are HIV negative and who do use condoms whenever they have sex. Our films allow them to fantasize about not having to cover their cocks when having sex. Many of our viewers write to us and tell us that in their real lives they always use condoms, but they get to escape reality for a short period of time when watching our films.
Keith: Cream 'N Ass [2006] is your brand new release that has started shipping through White Tiger Releasing. With all of the promotion that you have thrown behind this gay xxx feature, are you expecting a No. 1 hit with this one?
Bill: One never knows how a film is going to do in the marketplace but I can say that sales so far have been outstanding and I would expect that it is going to be a very large hit. Think about it, what other film can you think of that is more that 3 hours long and has more than 100 cumshots. The action is fast and furious right from the beginning and doesn't stop for 3 solid hours. I've shown it at a couple of sex parties recently and it's been such a hit that the action at the parties actually stopped as the guys watched what was happening on the screen. Now, that's going some!
Keith: Tell us about the cast in Cream'N Ass [2006]?
Bill: You have to be kidding. Their are 72 guys featured in Cream 'N Ass!!! I will say that the cast consists of some of HDK's most popular models, such as Will West, Dillon Press, Chad Adams, Matt Sizemore, Steve Parker, Chad Adams, Jay Benjamin, Ray Butler, Jeff Allen and some of the most stupendous cum shots that have ever been seen. Just nothing more erotic than watching a guy who is so fucking excited that he shoots a load right over his head and their area lot of such shots in Cream 'N Ass.
Keith: Will West Raw [2006], and Xtreme M4M [2006] were major successes for the Hot Desert Knights Label. How do you come up with such themes that seem to drive gay consumers of gay xxx porn crazy?
Bill: Well Keith, it isn't rocket science. I'm gay, my partner, John is gay and everyone who works at HDK is gay. I think we know what the gay consumer is looking for in a fuck film and we give it to them. Many directors are so damned concerned about winning awards that when directing they tend to forget the reason the consumer is buying the film. Guys by fuck films for one reason and one reason only, TO GET IT UP AND GET IT OFF. When a director starts throwing in plots and "acting" and shoots a scene over and over and over just to get it exactly right so that he can win some dumbass award, then, the spontaneity of the sex tends to get lost. We want the sex in our films to be real. We want the guys to really be into each other and we want the sex to be fast paced and furious from the begining to the end. The best scene that we can shoot is one where the action is REAL, SPONTANEOUS and we don't have to stop the cameras because the guys are really in to each other and they just keep fucking till they are both shooting all over the place. It has to be real and it can't be if the director totally scripts the entire scene from beginning to end and then films for eight hours to get a 20 minute scene. We've never done that and we never will.
Keith: Retail loves the Hot Desert Knights Brand and I wouldn't be surprised to see Cream 'N Ass [2006] debut big in America on the JRL Weekly Top 50. Are you ever worried about putting out a project that doesn't meet the "Hot Desert Knights" Standards?
Bill: I suppose we always worry about putting something out that our customers aren't going to like so really, all you can do is the best you can and then let the customers decide for themselves. The real key, I suppose, is to know what your customer wants and then to work your ass off to make sure you give it to them. We aren't always going to make everyone happy with every film, but we are certainly going to try. For example, guys that aren't into fisting just aren't going to like our fisting films and guys into fisting probably aren't going to care for one of our films that doesn't have any fisitng in it. So, we try to put out a good mix of films keeping in mind always who are customers are and what they want us to do. And, we listen to our customers. We get emails and letters from our customers all the time making suggestions and I guarantee you we read each one, take each one seriously and we respond to each one personally.

Now that we aren't spending so damn much time on the distribution side of things, the production side is really gearing up and we'll be coming out with some of the hottest, steamiest bareback films the industry has ever seen. We've got two new releases that will be coming out within the next month or so and two films, a bareback film and a fisting film being filmed over the next couple of weeks. And, some of the guys lined up for these films are gonna make your viewers cream their shorts just looking at them!
